Dongtai once part of Haining County, Yanzhou Municipality. In 117 B.C. Xixi Town was built and in 937, as Haining County supervised Dongtai Farm to the northeast of Taizhou, the name Dongtai was from then on marked in historical records. Later Dongtai became a salt distributing centre for its convenient geographic location and in Song Dynasty was also named as Dong Ting for its numerous salt booths and ovens. Early in the middle and later period of the Neolithic Age, people has already multiplied and lived in Dongtai popedom.
Dongtai situated the middle of Jiangsu Province, belongs to the Yangtze Delta Economic Circle, bordering the Yellow Sea and in the junction of Taizhou, Yangzhou, Nantong and Yancheng Municipality. It has been regard as a modern industrial and commercial city in the coastal zone of the middle of Jiangsu Province by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province.
Dongtai is endowed with a fertile land, four distinct seasons, and sufficient sunshine and rainfalls. The average temperature in a year is 15.6C, with a frost-free period covers 237 days, annual sunshine period is 2209 hours. The annual precipitation is 1044mm.
The city belongs to aggraded valley plain in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
Dongtai has built up convenient transportation network and complete infrastructures. Three airports, including the airport of Nantong City, Yancheng City and Rugao County, are close to the downtown area of Dongtai (less than 70km away). No.204 National Road, the Xin-chang Railway runs across the Dongtai region. The water transportation, such as Tongyu Canal, Taidong River and Chuanchang River has been highly developed. The successful construction of Nin-jing-Yan Speedway and Yanhai Speedway lessens the journey between Dongtai and Shanghai or Nanjing within 2 hours.
