Haikou, situated at the north of Hainan Island, is the capital of Hainan Province of the People's Republic of China and has an estimated population of 830,192 (2006), therefore by far the largest city on the island. Haikou stands at the northern end of Hainan Island, on the west bank of the Nandu River estuary. This river is the longest on the island and the city's name means 'Mouth of the Sea'.
With the sea on three sides of the city, Haikou enjoys a long coastline with excellent bathing beaches and seaside resorts Haikou has a number of important historical sites such as the Wugong Temple, the Tomb of Hai Rui and the Xiuying Emplacement.
Haikou has an abundance of seafood and fresh local fruits such as mangos, pineapples, jackfruits, coconuts and carambola, betel nuts, paw paw, longan and lychee, loquat, naseberry and passion fruit. Wenchang Chicken, Dongshan Mutton, Jiaji Duck and Hele Crab are local cuisine specialities.
Haikou City has an average annual temperature of 23.6C and an annual rainfall of 1,690 mm. The city has beautiful scenery and a pleasant. The transportation links are well established with Hainan Meilan Airport, railway station, ship and expressways.
