Hsinchu City is a city in northern Taiwan. Hsinchu is popularly nicknamed "The Windy City” for its windy climate. Hsinchu City is administered as a provincial city of Taiwan Province, Republic of China. The city is bordered by Hsinchu County to the north and east, Miaoli County to the south, and the Taiwan Strait to the west. Hsinchu City is composed of three districts: North District, East District, and Siangshan District.
Hsinchu is the 10th largest city in Taiwan with a population of about a half million. It’s best known as the home of Hsinchu Science Park, "The Silicon Valley of the East". It's also home to two of Taiwan's most prestigious Universities. Each weekend there is a huge exodus of the young and single to either their hometown or to the excitement of the big city.
The High Speed Rail (HSR) leaves from Jhubai, about a 20-minute taxi ride from downtown Hsinchu. It's a fast, but expensive way to get to Taipai, the International Airport or Southern areas.
Attractions of Hsinchu include The Tung Men Square houses the only remnants of the old walls of the ancient city. The Tung Men Gate also stands here and attracts visitors to enjoy the antique architecture. To the south of the Tung Men is the Cheng Huang Temple of a powerful Chinese deity. Lentoo Park preserves the culture of the aboriginal inhabitants and is a popular destination in the city.
The nearby mountain ranges provide a host of activities like bird watching and hiking. Another attraction for the tourists in Hsinchu is the two night markets of the city. The markets are bustling centres offering a variety of latest electronic gadgets. The climate in Hsinchu is mild, however, the wind turns very strong from autumn through early spring.
In, September is the Hsinchu Rice Noodle & Meatball Festival. According to the Hsinchu City government, after the Mid-Autumn Festival, winds begin to blow from the northeast, marking the season for drying rice noodles.
