Huaian is a prefecture-level city in northern Jiangsu province, People's Republic of China. It borders Suqian to the northwest, Lianyungang to the north, Yancheng to the east, Yangzhou to the southeast, and the province of Anhui to the southwest. One of the attractions of the city is Lake Hongze, the fourth largest freshwater lake in China, occupying an area of 2,069 square kilometres, and has been dubbed "Lake of Treasures".
Adjacent to the Grand Canal and other three major rivers (Huaihe, Yanhe, and Huaishu Rivers), Huaian has a highly developed agricultural irrigation and water transportation system. Huaiyin located in the temperate monsoon zone and has four distinct seasons, with average temperature 14 degree and annual precipitation 940 millilitre. The city has 2,130-2430 sunlight hours per-year.
Huaiyin has now become the transportation hub in Jiangsu. The Beijing-Shanghai, Huaian-Lianyungang and Nanjing-Suqian expressways, which cross the city, have been completed. Another two expressways like Nanjing-Huaian, Xuzhou-Huaian-Yancheng is in construction. The Xinchang railway, which has been put into operation, also crosses the city. Huaian also has a complete water networks. The Beijing-Hangzhou canal, northern Jiangsu irrigation system, Huaihe River and its route to the Yangtze River and the Yellow sea all locates in the city.
