Huaibei is one of several cities in China that have unearthed a large number of fine quality stone relics of the Han Dynasty and porcelains of the Tang and Song Dynasties.

The discovery of Liuzi Pier along the Great Canal built in the Sui and Tang Dynasties proved that Huaibei was a major business town 1400 years ago.

The 2500 km Great Canal is the longest and earliest canal in the world, and it is considered worth of comparison with the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. The Canal, connecting five famous rivers such as the Haihe River, Yellow River, Huaihe River, Yangtze River and Qiantangjiang River, was an important south-north transportation line in the Sui, Tang and Song Dynasties, making remarkable contribution to the political economy and water conservancy of that time.

The Liu Kaiqu Memorial is located at the beautiful southern foot of the Xiang Mountain, adjacent to the historical Xiantong Temple.

A major energy base with a thriving city of coal industry Huaibei is situated in north Anhui and borders three provinces, namely Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan.

It is an energy city built and developed upon coal industry. Huaibei is adjacent to the Yangtze River Delta and at the heart of Huaibai Economic Area.

Huaibei is also one of the key transport hubs with connection to Beijing-Shanghai and Lianyungang-Lanzhou railways, Lianyungang-Huoelgos and Beijing-Fuzhou freeways. Surrounding Huaibei, there are 4 cities with airports, i.e. Nanjing, Hefei, Zhengzhou and Xuzhou. Moreover, Huaibei is the closest city to seaport in Anhui Province, only 200 km away from Lianyungang, one of China's major deep-water seaports.

Huaibei boasts rich natural resources and solid industrial foundation. The perspective reserve of coal in Huaibei reaches 35 billion tons.

Huaibei boasts several wetland parks such as the South Lake and the East Lake, which make it easy for fresh and humid air to be transported into urban area by the monsoon from the southeast. In the winter, flocks of wild gooses and egrets migrate from the remote north to nest in the dense bulrush of the wetland.

Huaibei has a total green-covered area of over 2200 hectares, among which more than 800 hectares are urban public green area. The whole city is surrounded by green trees as if it is a huge garden. With the intent of building a green and garden-like city, Huaibei adheres to the people-first and environment-friendly principle in urban construction and pushes forward the social development and environmental protection in a harmonious manner.

Embraced by green mountains and six rivers, Huaibei has taken the advantage of the natural conditions and upgraded its urban ecological system in various sites, along the roads and the city at large. Over the years, Huaibei has won the titles of the National Garden and Greenery City and National Civilization Construction City and National City of Sanitation.

Huaibei people have a simple lifestyle. You can find plenty of teahouses at the old town Linhuan. Drinking tea is a 600 year old, local tradition. You can also enjoy the local opera shows in the teahouses. The two local operas, namely Sizhou Opera and Liuqin Opera, are known for their resonant an enchanting singing.
