FIND CHINA introduces Jilin City

Jilin City is a prefecture-level city located in Jilin Province in China. It has a population of 1,955,804 (metropolitan 1,900,751) and an area of 27,100 km². Jilin City is a popular destination for Japanese tourists who come each winter to view the rime ice on trees along the banks of the Songhua River. The rime ice is a natural phenomenon that occurs every year during January and February. It is a result of when water vapour rises up from the warm Songhua River to meet the cold -20 °C night air, causing the crystallisation of water vapour on willows branches. The ice-rimed trees in Jilin are one of the four natural wonders of China, along with the Guilin Mountains and Streams, Yunnan Stone Forest, and Three Gorges on the Yangtze River.

With a temperate continental monsoon climate, Jilin enjoys four distinct seasons, including dry and windy springs, warm and rainy summers, cool and sunny autumns and cold and snowy winters. It has a mean annual temperature of 3C~5C, an annual frost-free period of 120~130 days, and a total sunlight amount of 2400~2600 hours for the whole year. The mean annual precipitation of the city is 650~670 millimetres, which decreases from southeast to northwest, and mean hailstone period is 2~4 days, which often appears in May, June or September and October.

Jilin has excellent tourism resources with natural and cultural sceneries dotted here and there in the city. Jilin is also well known as a winter sports city with top-ranking facilities and skiing fields.

Jilin City airport (JIL): Location: 25 km/16 Miles W of the city centre. Bus #38 runs to the railway and bus station in the city.
