Jinchang is a prefecture-level city in China's Gansu province. Jinchang City is located in central Gansu province, west of the Yellow River, north of the Qilian Mountains, and south of the Alashan Plateau. The southwest of the city borders Qinghai Province and the northwest borders Inner Mongolia. The area is 8,896 km². Cultural sites such as the Han and Qing dynasty Great Walls are popular tourist sites.
The relatively undeveloped natural environment is also a draw for tourists. Jinchang city is in the east of Hexi Corridor, on the north of Qilianshan Mountain, and to the south of Alashan tableland. It is a newly developed industrial city founded on the basis of mines, nonferrous metal metallurgy and chemical industries. Now, it is the biggest nickel and cobalt production base in China and platinum group metals extracting centre.
The climate in Jinchang is typical of temperate zone and continental climate. Due to historical and geographic reasons, now the only connection with the outside is the provincial south-north direction 212 highway. The construction of Jinwu Highway will speed up the economic development. The Jinchang Airport is under construction. Jinchang does have good intercity rail connections, the city lies 22 kilometres south of Lanxin railway, part of Europe and Asia Continental Bridge, with railways in the operating area connected to the Lanxin railway.
